ABOUT ABOUT

2nd Annual Birdhers Trip to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, one of the birdiest spots in Oregon!

Birding camp for adults! Meet us at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to observe the birds that live and migrate throughout the area. Arriving in early June, we will catch spring migration, revel at the incredible plant life and high desert blossoms amidst the amazing geography of Eastern Oregon. Days should be warm and sunny with cool nights at about 4,000 ft. The high desert is a true wonder to behold.

All activities are optional and the agenda will be flexible to the needs of the group. Days may include: Meditative morning walks, sunrise birding, caravan driving through the refuge, stopping to walk 1-2 slow miles, group meals, sunset viewing, an evening soak at Crystal Crane Hot Spring ($5-$10 fee not included in ticket price), craft projects, night scorpion scouting and stargazing.

MNWR sits on unceded, stolen land of the Wadatika Band of the Northern Paiute people. In acknowledgment of the violence perpetrated by white colonization, we pay tribute to visit this place. A donation from Birdhers will be given to the Burns Paiute Tribe.

Malheur Field Station, where we will be staying, is a rural, cozy scientific outpost. No frills and definitely not glamorous but very sufficient, we will be staying in the 'A' dorm.

Ticket price includes:

  • Lodging at Malheur Field Station (bring own bedding, see website for more details)
  • All meals, Friday dinner through Monday breakfast (vegetarian and gluten free options available)
  • Donation to Burns Paiute Tribe
  • Tour with Birdhers founder and host, Han Lyons
